“You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. These sentences, otherwise known as Miranda Rights, are the words the police must read to a suspect if they intend to interrogate and question them. If the arrested asks for an attorney, any questioning must cease until he or she arrives to represent. If the arrested doesn’t immediately ask for an attorney, but later on asks for one in the midst of interrogation, they have the right to “plead the Fifth (Amendment).” Then, questioning must wait until the lawyer is present.

Just because a suspect asks for an attorney does not automatically mean they have something to hide from the police and did something wrong – it could mean they would like a lawyer who can explain things to them in a matter they would understand. They might just want the advice of the lawyer, yet still be found innocent of the offense they were arrested for.
